ABOUT THE PARK

Mount Baker Park is a gentle ravine boulevard sloping down to Colman Park and the Mount Baker Bathing Beach on Lake Washington…Local residents picnic and play tennis here, or set the kids loose in a small playground in the southwest corner. Others stroll down a wide pathway—under maples, mountain ash, and chestnut trees—to Lake Washington Boulevard and the beach. Restrooms are located partway down the path. The northernmost end of the park is the starting point for Bicycle Sunday.

HISTORY

Pioneer David Denny, the same Denny who donated the five-acre patch for Seattle's first public park in 1884, first owned the Mount Baker area. At that time, it was a quiet woods beside a stream trickling down to Lake Washington.

The Olmsted Brothers…were hired to design the Mount Baker Park Subdivision, and in 1898 this little section was donated to the city. By the late 1920s, the park had become an important public attraction, partly because of its proximity to the beach. And after 1950, when Stan Sayres located his headquarters for the unlimited hydroplane races at the beach just below, it was flooded annually with fans, who returned in quieter times for pleasant walks.

• Take exit #157 towards M.L. KING WAY
• Continue on MARTIN LUTHER KING JR WAY S
• Turn on right S MCCLELLAN ST
• Mt. Baker Park will be on your left, after 34th Ave S
• To get to the beach, turn left on Lake Park Dr S, keeping the park on your left
• Lake Park Dr S will come to a T at the beach

• Merge onto I-90 E via (EXIT 164)
• Take the RAINIER AVE S exit (EXIT 3)
• Turn RIGHT onto RAINIER AVE S
• Turn LEFT onto S MCCLELLAN ST.
• Mt. Baker Park will be on your left, after 34th Ave S
• To get to the beach, turn left on Lake Park Dr S, keeping the park on your left
• Lake Park Dr S will come to a T at the beach
