About the Beach

Swim Beach Comfort Station
The design of the replacement building for the Magnuson Park Beach Comfort Station marks the legacy of the park as a Navy Airfield with a slender, wing-like structure parallel to the shore and access road. The former swim beach restroom and lifeguard station was built by the Navy when the entire peninsula contained Naval Air Station, Seattle. Prior to closure of the air station in the 1970s, there were many structures along the Lake Washington shoreline which were used for recreation. The new comfort station occupies the site of the officer’s bathhouse. Built in the early 1940s, it functioned well into the early 2000s before it was substantially damaged by an arson fire. When completed, the new comfort station will allow future generations to enjoy Lake Washington, just as sailors and naval aviators did many decades ago.

Take a dip in Lake Washington! The Warren G. Magnuson Park swimming beach offers a tiny pebble shoreline-your gateway to refreshing waters that average 67 degrees during summer months (June to Labor Day). Play in the water with your children or do a few laps out to the swimming platform. Shallow (waist high to adults) waters stretch from the beach out about four feet. A drop-off beyond that becomes a depth of 10 to 12 feet. Done with water play for the day? Then toss your towel down and warm yourself in the sun on grassy flats west of the beach. A children's wading pool, picnic shelters and tables, are all available nearby. Bathrooms and water fountains are closed for the 2009 season, but port-a-potties with hand-washing stations are available. To get to the beach, enter the park at N.E. 65th Street from Sand Point Way N.E.. Drive straight ahead (east) to the lake, then left (north) along the shoreline. Park at the foot of Kite Hill, near "The Fin Art Project."
