EXTENDED: Seattle Animal Shelter waiving adoption fees for all foster care animals through Dec. 29
Adoption promo in memory of longtime kitty foster mom Kathy Sugiyama

SEATTLE - The Seattle Animal Shelter is extending through Dec. 29 its special adoption promotion being held in honor of longtime Shelter foster mom Kathy Sugiyama, who lost her battle with cancer a little over a year ago. During the promotion, originally scheduled to run Dec. 4 through Dec. 22, all adoption fees are waived for foster care animals. Licensing fees still apply. Since the promotion began, 77 foster animals have been adopted from the shelter.

"Because Kathy was such a dedicated foster mom, and because we have so many animals in need of forever homes, we are offering this adoption special in her memory. Kathy was an amazing person with such a kind heart full of love and compassion for animals, and she is truly missed by all of the staff at the Shelter," says Seattle Animal Shelter Director Don Jordan. "She had a particular affinity for cats, and her ‘kitties’ made her home complete. Kathy and her two daughters personally helped save the lives of countless animals. Kitties she fostered were in high demand as they were well socialized."

"We greatly appreciate the recognition of our mom by her good friends and colleagues at the Shelter," says Kathy’s daughters Mari and Alysa Sugiyama. "Our mom kept pictures and Shelter bios on all of her foster kitties. She even received follow-up emails from folks updating her on the progress of the kitties, long after they had been adopted, which speaks to her sheer interest and dedication. Our mom would have been overjoyed and humbled by this promotion and we hope others will be inspired to support the Seattle Animal Shelter in any way they can."

"Kathy strongly believed in the value of the human-animal bond, and was always encouraging others to bring animals, especially cats and kittens, into their families," says Jordan. "Just as Kathy welcomed multiple cats at a time into her home, we are hoping potential adopters will consider adopting two or three kittens to ensure that they have playmates and companionship for the rest of their lives. I express my heartfelt thanks to anyone who can open their home and help us honor the memory of our dear friend Kathy."

The free adoption package includes:

  • Initial vaccinations
  • Deworming
  • Feline Leukemia testing
  • Certificate for free health exam at local veterinarian
  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Microchip

While the adoption fees are waived during this promotion, if you reside in Seattle, you must purchase a pet license for dogs, cats, pigs and goats at the time of adoption.

Normally, adoption fees would total more than $150 per cat or dog, $40 for rabbits and $15 for critters, but the Help The Animals Fund is generously subsidizing this promotion. You can also make a donation to the fund in memory of Kathy Sugiyama; please visit http://www.seattle.gov/animal-shelter/donate.

Another way to help is to become a cat or kitten foster parent. The Seattle Animal Shelter is always looking for foster parents to provide temporary foster care in their homes to rehabilitate and nurture sick, injured and immature cats and kittens or to just give adoptable cats a break from the shelter environment. Make it your New Year’s resolution to become a cat foster parent and join us at the next orientation, Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Shelter’s conference room. Please RSVP by emailing sasfostercatsorientation@gmail.com.

The Seattle Animal Shelter, located at 2061 15th Ave. W., is open Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is (206) 386-7387. Foster animals available for adoption can be viewed online at http://www.seattle.gov/animal-shelter/adopt.
