Dr. Sandra E. Madrid to receive 2013 Latino Heritage Award
Dr. Madrid to be honored at 9th Annual Latino Heritage Award Celebration on October 26
SEATTLE - Today Mayor Mike McGinn and the City of Seattle Latino City Employees organization announced Dr. Sandra E. Madrid as the recipient of the 2013 Latino Heritage Award. Mayor McGinn will present the award on October 26, 2013 at Seattle Center, Armory, Center House Main Floor, 305 Harrison Street, Seattle, WA 98109. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. with the award ceremony scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and it’s free and open to the public.
Dr. Madrid retired from the University of Washington School of Law in the fall of 2013. Over the years, Dr. Madrid has done much to enrich the Latino influence, particularly of Latina women in the City of Seattle, Washington State and on a national level. She’s worked hard on inclusion and bringing a Latina voice to the table. She’s a strong advocate for the underrepresented and specifically women and children of diverse backgrounds. She currently serves on the boards of United Way of King County (past chair), Seattle Art Museum, YMCA, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. She has served on over 30 boards in the past 20+ years. She was the first Latina to serve on the Seattle Children’s Hospital Board. Dr. Madrid is always educating, promoting and mentoring young professionals. In the words of Assunta Ng (NW Asian Weekly), who nominated Dr. Madrid, "she is tireless in her dedication and energy."
The informal part of the event includes with a night of dancing to Latin sounds by "Eduardo Alarcon, La Calaca y sus Manos Magicas", and a best Catrina/Catrin contest.
The Latino Heritage Award recognizes an individual(s) who has made significant contributions to the Seattle Latino community by displaying leadership, initiative, creativity and dedication. Latino City Employees (LCE) is a voluntary organization of city of Seattle employees, and encourages professional excellence, promotes education within the Latino community, and supports cultural diversity in Seattle.
