Mayor McGinn's statement on Lummi Nation opposition to coal export terminal

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn gave the following statement today on the Lummi Nation's announcement of formal opposition to the proposed Gateway Pacific coal export terminal at Cherry Point:

"I support the Lummi Nation as they formally express their opposition to the Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point. The Lummi Nation is justified in their opposition based on the significant threats to not only their entire way of life, but their treaty rights.

I have joined with the Lummi in the Leadership Alliance Against Coal, along with more than 50 other elected and tribal officials, because we must avoid the impacts coal trains and coal export would have on the economy, environment, and health of communities throughout the Northwest.

In the past the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has denied permits when a tribe has determined that their treaty rights are threatened. I urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to listen carefully to the Lummi and other tribes that will come forward with their objections to the Gateway Pacific Terminal. Denying these permits is the right thing to do for the Lummi Nation, the state of Washington, and for our planet.

The local and regional impacts of the terminal and the coal trains are too great, and with carbon emissions reaching record levels and the effects of global warming apparent to us all, we must act now to make the transition to cleaner energy sources than coal."
