5th Annual African American Caregivers Forum: Remembering Our Legacy of Love

Provides a culturally relevant setting that informs participants about Alzheimer’s disease.
Focuses on helping caregivers to reduce stress, to enhance caregiving skills, and to learn about respite care and other resources that support their commitment to caregiving.

This year’s keynote speaker is Connie Thompson of KOMO-TV.

MCAAE hosts Healthcare and Healthy Aging Community Breakfast Forum - July 31, 2010

About 50 older adults, providers and community members attended the July 31st, 2nd Annual Healthcare & Healthy Aging Community Breakfast Forum, co-sponsored by the Mayor's Council on African American Elders, the Central Area Senior Center, and HSD. Highlights included: a welcome by the Mayor, introduction of HSD Director Dannette Smith, and a special award presented by the Council to Senator Rosa Franklin (29th Dist) retiring at year’s end from a long and historic career as the first African American woman elected to the Washington State senate. Forum panelists included David Loud, Community Liaison for Congressman Jim McDermott, Gene Frogge, Deputy Administrator, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid,  State Representatives Sharon Tomiko Santos, and Eric Pettigrew (37th Dist), and Senators Ed Murray (43rd Dist) and Rosa Franklin. Topics covered during this informative session included the new Healthcare Reform Law, and how it is intended to reduce costs, disparities, and fraud. State legislators also discussed the economic challenges they will face during the next legislative session.
