Seattle's Comprehensive Plan
2012-2013 Annual Amendments
Thanks for following our Comp Plan update project. We're excited to provide you with these recommendations and background reports on some of the most significant amendments in this year's cycle.
The major review of the Seattle Comprehensive Plan will shape how Seattle grows over the next 20 years. We need your ideas to get this project started. What's most important to you? What excites you about Seattle's future? What are the big challenges?
Creating Seattle’s Sense of Place
Urban design policies can help create and preserve Seattle’s “sense of place” -- the look and feel of the city. This is especially important as we add more housing and businesses in the Urban Centers and Urban Villages. We can use good urban design to enhance our natural, built, and cultural environments that make Seattle the truly beautiful city it is. Citywide “patterns” -- such as how the city’s buildings and streets relate to water or topography, how neighborhoods have evolved around greenbelts or vistas, or how iconic views frame our shared experience of the city -- can serve as the basis and guide for the appearance of future development.
DPD will be proposing new urban design policies for the Seattle Comprehensive Plan to help preserve these patterns as Seattle grows and evolves. The new urban design policies will help assure future development preserves the character of our neighborhoods and of Seattle as a whole. DPD’s new policies will be informed by our draft background report, Urban Design Seattle, about the historical and modern patterns that have shaped Seattle’s human and natural environment.
How do you think we should use design keep Seattle’s “sense of place”? Send us an email or post a comment on Facebook with your ideas.
2011-2012 Comp Plan Amendments Now Available
We’ve just released the 2011-2012 Comp Plan Amendments, which includes all revisions to the Comprehensive Plan adopted through April 2012. You can download the replacement pages or the complete updated plan from our “Read the Plan” page. Free CDs are available from the DPD Public Resource Center on the 20th floor of the Seattle Municipal Tower, 700 5th Avenue, (206) 684-8467.
Every year, the City amends the Seattle Comprehensive Plan with ideas submitted by residents, community organizations, and City departments. These amendments help keep the Comp Plan up to date.
You can follow the amendment process on our “Annual Amendments” page. From there you can also subscribe to our listserv or research amendments from the past seven years.
For detailed 2012-2013 proposed amendments, visit the City Council’s Comprehensive Plan website.
Update -- Major Review Schedule Change
City Council has directed DPD to take a phased approach to the Comprehensive Plan update because the state deadline for completing a review and adopting updates was moved to June 2015. Final Council action on the update will likely happen in the first half of 2015. Council may take action on some parts of the Plan earlier, as part of the annual amendment cycles in 2013 and 2014. We will add further details about the schedule as they become available.
We will continue to provide opportunities for public engagement during the comprehensive plan update process. Watch our website,
Facebook page, and Twitter feed (#SeaCompPlan) to stay involved with this project.
Public Involvement Program
The City is reviewing its outreach plan and will post additional information on this page. Stay tuned!
