International Codes Replace Uniform Codes August 15
July 28, 2004

The first major update to Seattle's construction-related codes in 30 years is finally here.

Ordinances adopting the 2003 International Building, Residential, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes* (I-Codes) with Seattle amendments, and amendments to the State Energy Code, were approved by the City Council on July 6, and signed by Mayor Greg Nickels on July 16.

Using the I-Codes for Building Permit Applications

  • The 2003 I-Codes take effect Aug. 15, 2004.
  • DPD is currently accepting applications designed to the I-Codes before Aug. 15 as a code alternate. However, applicants who wish to use the I-Codes as a code alternate should call (206) 684-8850 for a presubmittal conference.
  • For 60 days after the Aug. 15 effective date, DPD will accept applications designed to either the 1997 Uniform Codes or the 2003 I-Codes.
  • In order to vest to the 1997 Uniform Codes, a complete building permit application must be submitted to DPD by the end of the 60-day period (Oct. 14, 2004).
  • Any applications received after Oct. 14 will be required to comply with the I-Codes.
