A City at Work: Images from the Seattle Municipal Archives Photo Collection

Planning & Code Enforcement: Introduction

Seattle has enacted many codes to promote public safety and protect public interests by regulating land use, building construction, street use, and weights and measures to name a few. This process includes policy, permitting, and enforcement components. Several city departments are responsible for carrying out one or more of these responsibilities including the Department of Planning & Development (formerly DCLU/Building Department), Transportation Department (formerly Engineering Department), Weights & Measures under the Department of Executive Administration (formerly under the Comptroller and Public Utilities Department), and the Fire Marshal's Office.
