A City at Work: Images from the Seattle Municipal Archives Photo Collection

Fire Department: Introduction

Although established by City Charter in 1883, the Fire Department did not become a professional operation until after the Great Fire of 1889. The City built several fire stations to protect its commercial center and suburban neighborhoods and established the Fire Marshal's Office in 1901 to enforce the City's fire code.

The Photograph Collection contains more than 3,800 fire or fire department related images viewable from the Photograph Index. Older photographs document fires and fire stations. The Archives possesses hundreds more negatives and slides of Fire Department facilities and training from the 1970's through the 1980's. These photos can be searched and viewed at the Seattle Municipal Archives.
