The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was conceived to proclaim Seattle's importance as the gateway to the Pacific and its ascendancy to status as one of America's great cities. Seattle's city government played a significant role behind the scenes in preparing the city for the fair and the influx of visitors.
