2003 Cleanup

About 70 tons of trash were removed from the greenbelt. This picture was taken north of Holgate, adjacent to Dr. José Rizal Park.

The clean up was done by the Seattle Police Dept., Wash. State Dept. of Transportation, Seattle Dept. of Transportation, Wash. St. Dept. of Corrections, Seattle Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Seattle Dept. of Neighborhoods, Seattle Public Utilities, with support from King County and other public agencies

This interagency task force was coordinated by Jordan Royer of Seattle DON's Neighborhood Action Team, and subsequently a senior public safety advisor to the mayor. Mr. Royer is now working in the private sector.

SPD and Parks & Recreation do the heavy lifting -
 East Duwamish Greenbelt, Autumn 2003

"The Bunker" was a center of the criminal activity that came to dominate the greenbelt through much of 2003. Built with concrete blocks, framing, plywood, and hurricane fencing, it was camouflaged and commanded a ledge. Inside, paraphernalia for cooking and shooting smack.  Outside, a killer view of the mouth of the Duwamish.

The gang behind this takeover beat up most of the homeless people in the area and threw them out. They monitored police and other public agency activity, using cell phones for communication, and tracked City and State workers who entered their "territory."
